Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the attack rendered him without words and had to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
